Peaceful Patience

Waiting in the Weeds
The Eagles

It's comin' on the end of August
Another summer's promise almost gone
And though I heard some wise man say
That every dog will have his day
He never mentioned that these dog days get so long

I don't know when I realized the dream was over
Well, there was no particular hour, no given day
You know, it didn't go down in flame
There was no final scene, no frozen frame
I just watched it slowly fade away

And I've been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for my time to come around again and
Hope is floating on the breeze
Carrying my soul high up above the ground and
I've been keepin' to myself
Knowin' that the seasons are slowly changing you
And though you're with somebody else
He'll never love you like I do

I've been biding time with the crows and sparrows
While peacocks prance and strut upon the stage
If finding love is just a dance
Proximity and chance
You will excuse me if I skip the masquerade

And I've been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for the dust to settle down along the
Back roads running through the fields
Lying on the outskirts of this lonesome town
And I imagine sunlight in your hair
You're at the county fair

You're holding hands and laughing
And now the Ferris wheel has stopped
You're swinging on the top
Suspended there with him

And he's the darling of the chic
The flavor of the week is melting
Down your pretty summer dress
Baby, what a mess you're making

I've been stumbling through some dark places
Now I'm following the plow
I know I've fallen out of your good graces
It's alright now

And I've been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for the summer rain to fall upon the
Wild birds scattering the seeds
Answering the calling of the tide's eternal tune
The phases of the moon
The chambers of the heart
The egg and dart
A small gray spider spinning in the dark
In spite of all the times the web is torn apart

And I've been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for the time to come around again and
Hope is floating on the breeze
Carrying my soul high up above the ground and
I've been keepin’ to myself
Knowing that the seasons are slowly changing you
And though you're with somebody else
He'll never love you like I do

It's Just the Spin Cycle

A Wilson/ Justy Blog

Start Time: 1:14 PM

The word for the weekend: Drama!

It's official-- Leigh has the funk. The same funk that almost did me in a week ago. We need another Do-It-Yourself IV, stat.

It all started with the ice not freezing...

Justy: "WILSON!"

The purse party part of the evening went off without a hitch. Leigh helped me pick out a stylish purse-- she is making me over one piece at a time.

Then it was on to the Sugar & Spice party... Here drama unfolded... Let's just say, "Seriously?! Am I to blame here? I don't think so!"

You have to go through some processes there...

Even the sales lady was drama-rama... telling us about her 400lbs ex husband that she left for his best friend... but it was ok b/c her husband was fooling around with THAT guy's wife.

"Does she think she's black?"

This was all aided by more CRANAPPLE BLAST!

This time we tried it with cranberry vodka-- good plan. This became esp helpful as the international texts from THE DRAGON began.

"You are so sad."
Really? I'm sad? ya think?

Needless to say this led to McBritain drama... poor guy. A week in the US seems to be a good idea... esp after a slap in the face by fate... COME ON McBRITAIN! (We know you're reading this!)

This is where Leigh's GI tract decided to shut down.

This is something I can relate to. Justy made the ultimate sacrifice-- heading into the QuickSak, in pjs, with WONKY hair to get the magic potion: Orange (NOT BLUE, BITCHES) Gatorade.

Justy: "Don't go towards the light, Leigh!"
(muffled giggles from Leigh)

**For safety sake we kept her at a distance... she took over my spot on the couch, infecting all my bedding... and we took refuge in the kitchen... where Justy, in a fit of nervousness over McBritain, began cleaning and disinfecting everything. She put us in a BUBBLE! Then, when things got very stressful, she did the UNTHINKABLE!! She organized the damn pantry! For real!! "Forward Progress!"

Sadly, like the washer, Leigh tummy is still on spin cycle mode-- they even make some of the same noises. Quite disconcerting, really. I am scared to try to move her to the car... and even more afraid to put the car in motion. I think if someone had slapped my ass in a car last Sunday, that would have been the end. Well, of the car's upholstry anyway.

So here we are. Justy is trying to force stomach meds on Leigh. Leigh is turning greener @ the mere mention of THE PINK STUFF. (Justy: "Just trying to help....")

And to top it all off... McB seems to have fallen off the planet. This is also disconcerting.
(Justy:"Where'd he go?")

So we have watched Walk the Line... McSigh... and now we are on to Pretty Woman... "I want the fairy tale..."

Uh oh folks! She's back!!
(giggles) "Asshole! There's a word! That's my favorite word!" ~Leigh

You Think YOU'RE Tired?!

So what happens when you look up fatigue on Wikipedia?

JW: The pic cracks me up.
me: hahahahahaha
JW: Isn't that bizarre?
me: I loveit
JW: Of all the pics they could've used.
JW: I also love that the penguin has a ghetto gold chain.
JW: And mutton chops.
JW: "This penguin is exhausted from being a bad-ass 70s Elvis lookalike."

Donde esta los plane??

A Wilson/ Justy blog entry
Location: Vegas Airport
Starting Time: 6:15pm

Another Vegas Adventure is coming to a close. It has been another fantastic trip... even though I am fairly confident I (Wilson) was near death. There have been many firsts on this trip-- first time we got IN the fountain in front of the Paris (insert the WOOP WOOP noise police cars make here)...

First time we have seen it rain-- NOT fun...

And then there are the old standards-- NAPOLEON'S... damn we love that place! So many good times and memories there. Wilson even got called out this time-- Thanks David! We made more new friends there this year-- "Glasses"-- she knew the words to EVERY song-- so COOL!

"Scarf"-- we selected her from the crowd outside and motioned her in-- "ME?!" She said... she was wild.

The ladies from San Francisco that let us join them on our couch... the Canadian that Leigh had a slight language barrier with. The guy from CA there on a family reunion-- he's 47, in case you needed to know. And of course, our best buddies there: Billy & David. Sheer geniuses!

Today-- as Wilson is back among the living-- we took a stroll through Bally's and reminsced from Oct... CHOI! Lacy... meeting the Dragon... stalking breaks... Stripes: "Girls!". We even had a drink at OUR table @ the bar. It is kind of strange being in Vegas and knowing that McBritain is not going to randomly walk by... he has become a big part of our Vegas experience... and we miss him & his blue shirt not being around.

Of course, one of our favorite activities here is people watching... we have seen fanny packs, mardi gras beads, confused/ lost/ disoriented people galore... mismatched couples, zebra print pants, and old ladies in scooters abound... we saw a homeless man rummage through a trash can, pull out a beer bottle and proceed to drink from it. And for several people, it seems bad 80's hairstyles are making a comeback... or perhaps they never left in the first place. At the gate @ the airport there were 2 marines-- one completely shitfaced. I mean STUMBLING drunk. Apparently he got quite sick on the flight home-- threw up on some people and passed out in the floor. The cops were waiting to assist him off the plane. Ooh Rah!

HOLY BEANS! (aka frijoles)

Things They **SHOULD** Sell in Vegas

Random Airport Observations

~No matter how good an idea it seems, greasy Sbarro pizza is NOT always a great plan.
~Massive groups of travelling teenagers are annoying
~"TEXAS DEATH MATCH!" is **not** what you want to hear yelled across the food court.
~Delayed flights blow.
~No one, no matter how tough, should ever wear a Louis Vuitton VISOR... esp backwards
~The Burger King Bitch means business-- Don't get crazy!
~Banging metal on metal in the food court does not endear you to anyone. Nor does yelling, "Oh Balls!"
~The smell of Burger King mixed with feet is gross.
~"Big honkin'" is great adjective usage-- as in "all they had was this big honkin' straw"

Airport Quotes from us

~"Oh f*** me! Are they cheering?" - Justy, in response to a cheerleading convention in the terminal
~"People shouldn't wear viking hats... or bluetooths." - Saundra
~"No one seems surprised when we say we're from TN"
~"Control your luggage!"
~"Have a Southwest Day!"

Mixed Signals

So I am still torn about the movie He's Just Not that Into You. I really liked the book and what it had to say. But it presented a certain set of rules-- and the movie seem to break them. In case you haven't read the book or seen the movie, I won't give anything away.

The book makes you aware that things won't ALWAYS work out... not every story has a happy ending. And while not ALL the characters had happy endings-- there were MANY exceptions to Greg's proposed ways. I'm really curious what his thoughts on the script were. I'm sure he had some say-so in it...

The movie was sweet, if somewhat predictable. I liked it. It just didn't jive completely with the book, which was frustrating. (Trust me, Leigh was WAY more pissed than I was!)

So if you compare the book and movie, I'm sad to say it will leave you like most relationships-- confused by mixed signals.

I agree with this...

"Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that [Harry Potter author] Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and [Twilight author] Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."

USA Today

Book Club: 2009 List (so far)

I didn't keep a list of books I read last year-- I wish I had-- so I am adding that to my list of goals for this year. I know last I listened to the first 3 books in the Twilight series-- and part of the 4th. I read When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris (LOVE HIM!)... I also read some, as I call "easy reads"-- fun, mindless mysteries and such-- mainly while on vacation. And then there are my school reads-- books I read to the class. Some I read year after year, but I always try to squeeze in some new ones amongst the favorite standards. One that sticks out that the kids liked was The Ghost, The White House, and Me.

But that was 2008... it's done. Past. History.

So far in 2009 I have read/ listened to (remember, I LOVE audiobooks) a variety of things.

(Some of these are featured in entries below)

1. James & the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl (Yes, this is a school selection)
2. Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell (audiobook)
3. He's Just Not That Into You by Greg Behrendt & Liz Tuccillo
4. The Treasures of Weatherby by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (school)

Currently I'm reading:

The Anglo-Files: A Field Guide to the British by Sarah Lyall
Unnatural Causes by P.D. James

Next up for Audio:

Well, I'm not sure... maybe Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell
or Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

I also have The Chopin Manuscript downloaded-- just need to listen.

Any suggestions?

Book Club: Assassination Vacation

Audiobooks are one of my favorite things! Sure, some view them as lazy-- "Seriously! You cannot hold a book and read it yourself?!" Well, Yes, I CAN! However, I am also a multitasker. I like to listen to good books while I do other things like cook, clean, or drive. It's hard to hold a book, read, and do those things-- SO BACK OFF!

:)

My cousin-in-law Thom turned me onto audible.com. The first book I downloaded from them is Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell. I have never read any of her other work, but I enjoy her interviews on The Daily Show, etc.

And this book seemed perfect for me. Like Vowell, I enjoy history and love to travel to historical places and learn new things. And while I would not say that I am fascinated by death as she is, I do LOVE my real-life murder shows. Mysteries have always been a favorite and I love finding out more about how they (and other crimes) are solved.

In Assassination Vacation, Vowell travels to places researching more on presidential assassins. From James Wilkes Booth to the man that shot Chester Garfiled-- possibly one of the least known Presidents-- she looks into it.

And the information she finds and pieces together is brilliant! Now, while I think I would have enjoyed READING this book-- this is an example of a book I like to listen to much more. Vowell's funny little voice and dry, dark humor SHOULD be listened to! (Not unlike my favorite author, and fellow NPR-er, David Sedaris)

This book makes me want to plan a road trip... Who's with me?

Book Club: He's Just Not That Into You

How is it that I always forget how much I love to read? I mean, I guess I get busy... or don't MAKE time to read like I should. Usually I only read on vacation-- on one of my transcontinental or transatlantic flights... And I always think, "I should read more!"

As a kid I was rarely in trouble. Pretty much the only thing my mom got on to me about was reading past bedtime. I was the kid with the flashlights under the covers... or waiting silently till I hear my mom's bedroom door close before I turned the lamp back on.

Sunday my friend Leigh and I each bought a copy of He's Just Not That Into You to read before going to see the movie Friday night. As a rule I try to steer clear of "self-help" type books. The crazy aunts thought they were REALLY funny a couple of Christmases ago when they gave me one of Dr. Phil's books on dating and finding love. WOOF! But I found HJNTIY hilarious! And, as Leigh said, I'm pretty sure now that NO guy has EVER been into me.

You might think this would be depressing, and in some ways I guess it is. But reading the stories and examples in this book mirrored so many of my own experiences, and I guess reading it in this context made me realize how RIDICULOUS I have been in the past.

Yes, it is hard as hell to be a single thirtysomething... Hell, that's why they made a TV show about it years ago-- and that is why it was so popular! People relate! Will it suck to be single forever-- yeah, I guess. Would it be the end of the world? No... Though, I am not fond of the word "Spinster"-- so lets refrain from using that one, ok?

I liked the way this book was written-- it was an easy, fast read. The authors wrote like they were talking to you. They used real words, real examples, and real (gasp!) expletives. While Greg was upbeat, encouraging, and truthful, Liz was the voice we (women) all hear most in our head. The "Yeah, but what if..." voice.

I am certainly no dating expert-- as we all know. But I like what was said in the book. I hope to incorporate some of the advice. While reading it I was reminded of my New Year's resolution (To Be Fearless)... and I, as previously stated, have noticed that as I have gotten older, being single is getting easier. Yes I have moments of insanity-- pretty sure Justy can attest to one Sunday evening... but for the most part I am ok.

Do I think Prince Charming is out there? Well, I dunno about a PRINCE, but there's someone for me. In the meantime, I will take Greg's advice and not "waste the pretty."
